Explosion at ADM’s Decatur Facility: What We Know

On Sunday evening at approximately 7:11 p.m. there was an explosion within ADM’s Decatur, Ill., processing complex. This is ADM’s largest facility globally.

On Monday ADM confirmed the East plant, which produces soybean oil and white flake for soybean protein production, is down. The adjacent corn processing plant is also temporarily down, with the company saying it is working to safely resume its operations.

Reuters reports it has a soybean crushing plant on site as well as one of the largest corn wet mills in the world.

The incident has injured eight people, of which six were taken to the hospital. WAND-TV reports four Medivac helicopters airlifted the injured from Decatur Memorial Hospital to trauma centers for higher level of care. As of Tuesday morning, five ADM employees remain in the hospital.

The resulting fire was brought under control before Monday morning . The cause for the explosion is still unknown and being investigated.
