Heavy disease pressure, hard rains and high winds have contributed to poor stalk quality and down corn this season in parts of Illinois and other states.

If that describes your situation, be prepared to slow your harvest speed and use some different tools and techniques to get as many bushels out of the field and into the bin that you can, says Ken Ferrie, Farm Journal Field Agronomist and owner of Crop-Tech Inc., Heyworth, Ill.

In the following video, Ferrie offers some practical steps you can take to improve your harvest outcome. Some of the things he touches on, include:

-Why you might want to harvest against the lean to improve gathering;

-What a corn reel can do to help you limit losses;

-Combine adjustments that can improve grain pick up
