U.S. interest rates and the stock market are in a holding pattern as we await this week’s FOMC meeting (beginning Tuesday) and the subsequent interest rate decision on Wednesday afternoon. A pause is likely, however, the Federal Reserve is in a difficult position given last week’s 3.7% print for the Consumer Price Index, driven by higher gasoline prices. On the flipside, labor markets and consumer spending on goods continue to soften, as Fed tightening over the past 18 months are starting to take effect. Stay tuned.

The September WASDE report included several adjustments that were largely expected due to heat and drought. What is fascinating is the tightness of the global wheat situation, coupled with the fact that wheat prices don’t seem to care. Beyond the Fed, we are focused on hurricane activity, low water levels on the Mississippi River and Panama Canal, the latter being a major risk for global trade, and the risk of a U.S. government shutdown. We are also closing watching oil prices (Brent Crude is trading near $95/barrel this morning), and continued Chinese military activity near Taiwan’s airspace.

Despite these risks, the New York Giants found a way to win on Sunday, coming back from a 20 point deficit at half-time to beat the Arizona Cardinals 31-28, the biggest comeback in the franchise’s history. The Washington Commanders also had an impressive turnaround, so at least (for the authors of the Executive Briefing) we start Monday on a positive note.

The Watch List: What We Are Monitoring

Monetary Policy

  • The Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision comes out this Wednesday. Most expect a pause, however the fed is in a difficult position given rising CPI in August.

Harvest

  • The September WASDE included downward revisions for U.S. corn and soybeans due to ongoing heat and drought issues in the Midwest. The other big item was that global wheat ending stocks are estimated to be the lowest since 2015/16.

Logistical Bottlenecks

  • Low water levels on Mississippi River threaten the movement of grain, while a similar situation on the Panama Canal is also bad for U.S. exports, as well as fertilizer, chemicals and liquid national gas.

Brazil Ethanol

  • We often talk about Brazil outproducing the U.S. in terms of soybeans and corn, however, a new development has occurred. The country is now expected to produce 8.7 billion gallons of ethanol in 2023, 5% more than it produced last year, in part due to a surplus of local sugarcane and more corn-ethanol production. The government is also considering increasing the gasoline blend rate from 27% to 30%.

Government

  • Shutdown risk is back on the table for the U.S. Government on October 1, 2023.
