Thermometers are boiling across the country as the heat of the summer sets in. Thankfully, July marks the start of National Ice Cream Month. Why not cool off with a scoop or two of your favorite flavor?

According to the International Dairy Foods Association, the average American eats roughly 20 pounds of ice cream each year, or about 4 gallons. America’s top 10 favorite ice cream flavors include:

  1. Vanilla
  2. Chocolate
  3. Cookies & Cream
  4. Mint Chocolate Chip
  5. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
  6. Buttered Pecan
  7. Birthday Cake
  8. Strawberry
  9. Moose Tracks
  10. Neapolitan

According to indexbox, ice cream is the most popular farther north, with particularly high demand found in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.

While Americans can indulge in ice cream every day, in 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. This year, National Ice Cream Day will be Sunday, July 16.
