In a world of waterhemp, tar spot and environmental curveballs, Scott Kay, vice president of U.S. crop protection for BASF, is excited about the innovations on deck. He has spent the past 14 years of leadership with the company championing the people who work for BASF and the retailers and farmers they serve.
How is BASF working with retailers today?
Ag retail is the trusted adviser to the farmer. From soil testing to seed selection to fertilizer recommendations, the ag retailer influences total production. Digital tools provide a way to work with ag retailers with more ease and confidence. We are working with our team to be specialists rather than generalists.
What is BASF’s greatest advantage in the marketplace right now?
Our greatest advantage is our people. They are professional and focused on delivering innovation. Their agronomic skills are second to none. Our people are good teachers who take pride in training and teaching.
What is most promising about the smart spraying solution in development?
One Smart Spray will revolutionize how we look at weed control. With a road map of where weeds are located, we will have a better view of when to apply. All that information will help retailers make better recommendations. BASF is open to other spraying technologies, including green-painted sprayers.
What do you want retailers to know heading into 2024?
We will have a consistent supply of products. In recent years, BASF has spent $150 million to enhance herbicide production efficiency. The company has invested in shipping, trucking and logistics and worked to move supply closer to farmers — within one to two states. After the supply chain challenges the past three years, we won’t forget how to communicate. We also need to focus on how we can work with retailers and farmers to control weeds earlier and invest in post-spray innovation.
About the Company
Did you know BASF is an acronym for Badische Anilin and Sodafabrik, which is German for Baden Aniline and Soda Factory? At 158 years young, its portfolio includes seed, trait, crop protection, seed treatment and digital farming solutions.
