This fall at an industry event, a peer from the ag retail industry said to me, “I could never nominate myself.” And I responded, “Oh, yes, you can.”
Specifically, I was encouraging this person to apply for The Scoop’s 40 Under 40 recognition.
These leaders in ag retail are writing the early chapters of their careers during an incredibly dynamic time. They are problem solvers. They are early adopters. They are trusted advisers. And they might be you, but they are definitely one of your colleagues.
You can self-nominate or submit an application on behalf of someone else. This will be the third year for the program with credit to Nufarm as our sponsor.
Millennials sometimes get a bad rap for needing the participation trophy. This is not a participation trophy. The selected professionals, who are now sometimes working on two decades of ag retail experience, are casting the next era of ag retail.
This spring, I reached out to our most recent cadre of awardees, and I invited anyone who was interested to come on the podcast and talk about the challenges and trends in ag retail. More than 16 of these leaders gave an interview, shared their insights and talked about the industry.
The interview with Nelson McCord is on page 58. His comment to “see the business for what it is, not what your vision is of it” still resonates with me. Sometimes, we get tunnel vision with what’s in front of us or what our priority is or we think it should be. But widening our vision to see others’ contributions and challenges is how we all achieve more.
