The Maalox Moment: What a 175-Bushel Swing Teaches About Hybrid Selection

Yield champions Randy Dowdy and David Hula saw hybrid performance differ significantly this season in the same fields under the same management practices. Their evaluation process went beyond yield and can help corn growers working on their seed decisions for 2027.

Randy Dowdy expected his corn field trials to deliver familiar lessons regarding weather, fertility and proven genetics.

What he got instead was a 175-bushel-per-acre wake-up call.

In the same field, under identical weather conditions and fertility programs, some hybrids yielded in the upper 300s while others struggled to reach 225 bushels per acre. Same soil. Same inputs. Same management. Vastly different results.

“That was a Maalox moment,” Dowdy tells AgriTalk Host Chip Flory.

For growers starting to evaluate genetics for 2027, those results carry a valuable message: The hybrids you choose matter more than you might think — and the ones that win on someone else’s farm might not be the right answer for your fields.

The 15-Acre Insurance Policy

Dowdy limited each hybrid to roughly 10 to 15 acres in his 2026 trials — enough ground on his south Georgia farm to reveal how genetics perform under real-world conditions without risking an entire crop on an unproven variety.

That strategy paid off.

“We saw some corn in the upper threes, one end of the field to the other — that’s exciting,” Dowdy says. “Then when you got a hybrid out there that makes 175 bushels less and nothing’s different, and you’re at the 225 mark, that was not encouraging.”

Some of those hybrids won’t be back on his fields in 2027. The decision, he adds, isn’t about brand loyalty or seed-company reputation.
It’s about finding genetics that fit his farm’s specific environment, common stresses and management system.

“The seed companies all feel like they got a product that yields well, and they do in certain environments,” Dowdy says. “What we have to do is figure out what works best the way we’re gonna grow corn and the way we do things with our challenges,” he tells Flory.

The Non-Negotiables: Standability and Grain Quality

While yield is always a huge consideration, Dowdy has a couple of factors he believes are equally if not more important. First on his list is whether a corn hybrid can stay standing throughout the season.

“Number one, they gotta be standing,” he says. “If a hybrid doesn’t stand, it’s out the window off the bat. If it makes 500-bushel corn and it’s on the dirt, I ain’t interested.”

Down corn doesn’t just slow harvest — it drives up field losses, damages equipment and turns a high-yield hybrid into a headache.

Grain quality is equally critical. “If I can’t sell it due to ear rots and everything else, what good does it do for me to make high yields?” he says.

That perspective, Dowdy adds, shifts the conversation with seedsmen from discussing what a popular hybrid number is to reviewing traits that determine whether a corn hybrid can be grown, harvested, and profitably sold.

Heat Separated the Winners from the Pretenders

Dowdy’s 2026 field trials revealed how dramatically corn hybrids can respond to heat stress, particularly nighttime temperatures that remain elevated.

One hybrid, he says, struggled with high temperatures and finished with test weights in the 53- to 54-pound range. Another hybrid in the same field produced significantly more grain with test weights of 60 to 62 pounds, despite the heat.

Dowdy doesn’t attribute the entire 150- to 175-bushel yield gap he saw between hybrids to test weight alone.

“I won’t say 150 bushels came from just the test weight,” he says. “But I think part of it’s coming from test weight, and then part of it’s just that nighttime temperature and some of the tip back that occurred as a result.”

Other performance factors Dowdy evaluates as he reviews hybrids: leaf architecture and how each hybrid performs at different row spacings, which he says influences light interception and yield potential in higher-population settings.

What’s Happening Below Ground Also Matters

Hula evaluates hybrids in a manner similar to Dowdy, and adds another layer to the evaluation process by examining root systems.

“David is looking below-ground at root architecture,” Dowdy says. “He likes to dig with a shovel more than I do.”

Root architecture can help explain differences in nutrient uptake, plant health and stress tolerance, says Hula, based in Charles City, Va. He also observes what happens above-ground with hybrids late in the season.

“I want to see how well we can keep the crop green longer,” he says. “If I can keep it green longer, then I have a better chance to influence test weight.”

Hula also evaluates ear position and husk coverage late-season. He notes that open husks expose ears to corn earworms and blackbirds, while late-season rain can trigger disease pressure and other grain-quality issues.

In addition, when Hula encounters a poor-performing area during harvest, he doesn’t automatically blame the hybrid. He investigates.

“You can’t dig while you’re in a combine, but you can sure stop a combine,” he says.

Hula recently stopped to investigate a “struggling spot” in one of his fields and pulled a soil sample to determine why it wasn’t yielding like the surrounding corn. He anticipates the results will help him improve that area next season.

The Evaluation Process Doesn’t Stop at Harvest

Hula’s assessment of corn genetics continues even after the grain comes off fields. He watches what happens to a hybrid’s residue afterward.

“If we can harvest the corn green and have drier corn, then the residue is going to start disappearing,” he says.

That matters to growers managing heavy residue in the fall or establishing the following crop the next spring.

Your Farm Is the Real Test Plot

Ultimately, both growers say farmers need to generate their own field data and track record with the hybrids they use.

For example, Hula cites a dryland strip trial he had this season with three different hybrids, managed identically with fungicides and aerial-applied fertilizer. They yielded an average of 275 bu. to 307 bu. per acre — a 32-bu. swing.

“Even though the seed companies have their plots, their hybrid trials, everything’s different on your own farm,” he says.

As growers start their hybrid selection process for 2027, the Dowdy and Hula hope their experiences and evaluation process can help growers as they evaluate hybrids for next season.

Dowdy says the wild bushel swing he saw this season is a reminder that the cost of choosing the wrong hybrid isn’t just the price of a bag of seed.

It’s the difference between a bin-busting year and a Maalox moment.
