While corn and soybean conditions continued to decline this week, it’s a different story for the nation’s cotton crop. Conditions look to be improving as the crop draws closer to harvest.
According to the latest USDA data, 71% of the U.S. cotton crop is now rated good to excellent, a 4-point increase compared to the week prior. Only 6% of the crop is rated very poor to poor.
“Compare that to last year’s crop which was just 46% good to excellent, 25% poor to very poor on this date,” says Brad Rippey, USDA meteorologist. “Other southern crops also continue to perform well this summer amid relatively cool and generally wet conditions.”
The number one production state for cotton of Texas has 72% of the of cotton crop setting bolls, which trails the national average.
