After joining Landus in February 2025, Sam Caton has been working in the role as executive vice president of sales. On Tuesday afternoon, he was named interim CEO after the departure of Matt Carstens on April 4.

Caton’s role as interim CEO is effectively immediately, and he’ll keep his responsibilities as executive vice president of sales. The company says one of his first tasks will be leading the search for the next CEO.

“I’m honored, and frankly humbled, to be trusted with the exciting task of leading Landus forward, and I know the best way to do so is with the guidance of our farmers,” Caton says. “I’ll be establishing an open line of communication with our farmer-owners to hear directly from them on what they want to see from the next CEO of the cooperative, and I look forward to working with our board to identify the next leader of Landus.”

Most recently before joining Landus in early 2025, Caton was at Simplot as business unit director for the northern region.

On Wednesday morning, Caton shared with employees his vision: “Together, we’ll move forward with clarity, purpose, and renewed focus on what matters most: delivering value to our farmers, supporting our teams, and securing a strong future for Landus.”

“We have full confidence in Sam’s abilities to guide Landus forward as the interim CEO. His sincere appreciation for the farmer-owners we serve has quickly built trust within the organization and helped him develop a deep understanding of our operations and vision,” says Matt Chambers who is Chairman of the Board and had been filling the role as acting CEO since Friday. “We have full faith in his leadership as we start the next chapter at Landus and implement the search to identify our next CEO.”
