Weigh-In on the Value of Pyrethroids

Weigh-In on the Value of Pyrethroids

Today, the National Association of Independent Crop Consultants (NAICC) issued a request to crop consultants, agronomists, retailers and other ag professionals to submit any comments they have on pyrethroids to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by the deadline this Friday, July 7.

"Our members have expressed concern about the ongoing pyrethroid class review," the NAICC news release states. "We believe any assessment should be based on high-level scientific studies and reflect real world risk and impact.  To make a decision based off anything less would be irresponsible and the agricultural industry could face serious consequences.  Pyrethroids are widely used and are among the most thoroughly researched active ingredients. This allows for safe use in commodities, specialty crops, and for residential and household purposes.

"Pyrethroids are an important tool in long term resistance management.  Limiting our ability to use pyrethroids, or worst case, the cancellation of products could lead to dependence on less effective, higher cost means of control, or having no options at all. Considering another regularly used insecticide, chlorpyrifos, is under its own scrutiny, in many cases, our only option for control is a pyrethroid."
