Rural Recruits Make Up Roughly Half of Military

Memorial Day is more than backyard cookouts and fireworks—it’s a day to honor those who served our country.
While rural residents account for 17 percent of the entire U.S. population, more than 44 percent of recruits come from rural areas.
Those in rural areas are 20 percent more likely to join the military than their urban peers.
According to the Department of Defense, rural recruits are easier to train and make better soldiers than urban recruits. In general, the Department found urban recruits have a bad attitude and difficult time following instructions than rural recruits.
