Nutrien announced this week it will build the world’s largest clean ammonia production facility in Geismar, Louisiana, to “decarbonize agriculture and other hard-to-abate sectors.”

Raef Sully, Nutrien’s executive vice president and CEO, says the company is “optimally positioned” to produce clean ammonia for the ag supply chain through the facility in Louisiana. He says the Geismar site will:
1.    Produce 1.2 million metric tonnes of clean ammonia
2.    Capture at least 90% of carbon emissions, sequestering 1.8 million metric tonnes of carbon per annum.
3.    Have the potential to reach net-zero emissions.

Nutrien’s sustainability focused Feeding the Future Plan will come to life through the ammonia facility, according to Interim President and CEO Ken Seitz.

“Leadership in clean ammonia production will play a key role in achieving our 2030 Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction goals,” he says. “Our commitment to the development and use of both low-carbon and clean ammonia is prominent in our strategy to provide solutions that will help meet the world’s decarbonization goals, while sustainably addressing global food insecurity.”

The roughly $2 billion site is currently in the design phase. Nutrien expects final investment decision will be made in 2023, with construction following until production lines open in 2027.
