For approximately 65% of farmers across the U.S., conventional or minimum-tillage practices are part of their management strategy. With that in mind, John Deere introduces the ST series of strip-till equipment and TruSet Active depth control for tillage.

John Deere returns to the strip-till market with a pair of three-point hitch integral models and three drawn models for dry fertilizer or anhydrous applications.

“Strip-till can improve soil health, reduce erosion and conserve soil moisture,” says Ryan Jardon, marketing manager for John Deere. “Strip-till has been shown to help farmers reduce input costs while maintaining yields and further maximizing their profitability. These new strip-till units give farmers the ability to prepare their seedbeds in the fall, so they’re ready to plant in the spring.”

Available Strip-Till Models

Farmers can choose from the ST12 and ST16 integral models or the ST12, ST16 and ST18 drawn models. All models offer a variety of shanks, coulters and row spacings so the implement can be customized by the farmer to best fit their field conditions and fertilizer application needs. In-cab row cleaner adjustments make it easy to adjust for changing conditions.

Integral models are available in 12 or 16 rows and on 30” spacing and can be outfitted with a third-party anhydrous or fertilizer system.

Drawn models are available in 12, 16 or 18 rows, with tanks that can carry up to 10 tons of dry fertilizer and scales. The ST12 and ST16 are available on 30” spacing and the ST18 is available on 20” or 22” spacing.

When paired with a John Deere tractor and the latest integrated precision ag technology, Jardon says: “John Deere Active Implement Guidance ensures your strips are exactly where you want them to be, even in turns or navigating hill sides. John Deere AutoPath uses your strip-till pass as the source path, so your planter can precisely follow your strip-till rows. John Deere AutoTrac and AutoTrac Turn Automation give farmers automated control of steering, speed and implements during turns for even greater efficiency. Each field pass can be documented with that data being uploaded into the John Deere Operations Center.”

John Deere strip-till units will be available to order in February 2023.

TruSet Active Depth Control for Tillage Tools

TruSet Active from JohnDeere

John Deere’s TruSet Active tillage technology offers a solution for depth control in tillage jobs. TruSet Active uses a sensor located on the main frame to actively check implement working depth and field conditions during operation. It automatically and precisely keeps the tool operating at the target depth set by the operator or tillage prescription.

Beginning with model year 2024, John Deere will include TruSet Active as base equipment from the factory on select tillage tools.

“This is another example of John Deere automation that is relieving a decision point an operator would have had to previously make on their own,” Jardon says. “For the first time in the history of tillage, when using TruSet Active, a farmer can automatically verify and know their tillage tool is adjusting for changing field conditions.”

Implement tires and shanks or disks can sink into the soil while moving through a wet spot in the field, tilling deeper than the farmer had initially set. In addition, if mud and residue build up on tires, the working depth could move higher than originally desired.

“TruSet Active corrects these issues by actively sensing the tool’s operating depth and automatically adjusting to changing conditions while moving through the field,” Jardon explains. “TruSet Active filters the sensor feedback, giving customers confidence in the gradual depth changes. If adjustments were made every second, it’s possible the machine would be adjusting over every clod of dirt, and that’s not the intent.”

Farmers can also use TruSet Active to document their tillage work in the John Deere Operations Center.

Available Tillage Models With TruSet Active

The first TruSet Active tools will be available to order in February 2023 on 2230 Field Cultivators, 2330 Mulch Finishers, 2660VT Vertical Tillage tools and 2630 Series Disks. Additional models will be available to order with TruSet Active at a later time.

In addition to TruSet Active, John Deere offers TruSet features on select models for model year 2024:

  • 2330 Mulch Finishers: Enable side-to-side leveling adjustments to easily ensure consistent performance across entire working width.
  • 2330 Mulch Finishers and 2630 Series Disks: Offer fore and aft adjustments – a benefit in sandy soils.
  • For all tools: Can automatically raise and lower ProFinish leveling system rolling baskets that work behind the implement when going through a wet spot in the field.
